Davie Boys and Girls Club Contributes to Mother Earth

Teens in the city of Davie show love and care for both their bodies and Mother Earth by spending time creating a wildlife habitat and vegetable garden at the Rick and Rita Case Boys & Girls Club.

Scout Gold Award Project

Town volunteers helped Girl Scout, Melissa Ellett, create this project, of hers, which she began planning last December 2010, as part of her Scout Gold Award project. When asked why she pursued in creating such project, she explained that she wants to help fight childhood obesity. She was also inspired and determined to do this due to price increases at the supermarket. “I wanted to start a garden to show others how to eat healthier and how they can grow some of their own food to help keep costs down,” she said. Melissa also organized a plant giveaway to help and encourage others to start their own gardens at home. Lowe’s and Costa Farms provided the donations.

Taking care of the community

“The wildlife habitat and garden has transformed their outlook on food,” she said. “… Not only are they making efforts to take care of the environment, but they are also telling their friends and families. To see that chain reaction … is more than anything I could ask for,” Melissa said while feeling great and happy.
